COUNTY HURLING LEAGUE
Our senior hurlers suffered their first defeat of the county Div 1 league last Friday evening in Gortnahoe. Gortnahoe were out of the blocks quickest, scoring 3 unanswered points in the opening 5 minutes. However, Upperchurch responded and both sides traded points over the remainder of the half with Gortnahoe narrowly ahead by one at half time. The second half began in a similar vein till Gortnahoe struck for the opening goal 9 minutes in, and followed this up a minute later with another green flag to go 6 ahead. Upperchurch battled to get back into the game but were hit by another Gortnahoe goal in the 21st minute to put the game beyond reach. Final score was 3-22 to 0-19 in favour of Gortnahoe. We are second in the table on 5 points, one behind Roscrea, heading into the last round of fixtures. We will play Carrick Swan on the weekend of May 10th. The group winner will advance to the county semi finals. We are also due to be in action in the Mid Cahill Cup quarter final on Tuesday May 12th against Moycarkey-Borris.
SENIOR FOOTBALL
The 2025 mid senior football championship semi final was played last Tuesday evening in Templemore. The opening exchanges were even and an Upperchurch goal from a penalty in the 13th minute put us 2 points ahead. However Brackens found their shooting boots and notched up 1-7 to a solitary Upperchurch point over the next 15 minutes. Upperchurch did narrow the gap to 5 points by half time. Upperchurch began the second half brightly, getting the opening two scores, and were firmly back in contention. The gap for the remainder of the half hovered between 1-3 points in favour of Brackens but Upperchurch could not manage to get the equalizing score. Brackens held out for a 1-16 to 1-15 victory and meet Loughmore in the final.
