PREMIER INTERMEDIATE HURLING
There were joyous scenes in Semple Stadium last Sunday as we put in an accomplished performance to take the county Premier Intermediate hurling crown after a six point victory over Carrick Swans. The large Upperchurch contingent in attendance got the best possible start when a long delivery from Luke Shanahan in the 2nd minute sailed all the way to the Carrick net, with full forward Paul Shanahan causing a nuisance on the edge of the square. Carrick settled by scoring the next three points but Upperchurch once again took charge via points from Pat Ryan, Paudie Greene and placed ball scores from Luke Shanahan and Gavin Ryan.
Playing conditions were tough but Upperchurch managed to keep their advantage through a low scoring first half with further scores from frees giving us a 2 point advantage at half time. Despite playing into the wind, the second half started brightly for Upperchurch, Pat, Luke and Gavin notching more scores. A Toby Corbett point then put Upperchurch ahead by 5 for the first time midway through the half. Things were to improve further a few minutes later when Paddy Phelan rifled to the net after good work by Conor Fahey and Pat Ryan in engineering the chance. The excitement was short lived though as Carrick responded within minutes for a goal of their own. This raised the fear of a Swans comeback but the Upperchurch defence was resolute and two points from Conor Fahey and a score from Paudie Greene were enough for Upperchurch to claim the Seamus O'Riain Cup 2-17 to 1-14. Captain Keith Ryan accepted the trophy on behalf of the team with a return to the senior ranks in 2026 now achieved. A campaign in Munster also awaits in 2 weeks time with the Cork champions Ballinhassig our next opponents.
Thanks to all who came to the match to support and also those present for the homecoming in Upperchurch Hall on Sunday evening.
