A thrilling climax saw us snatch a narrow win over Ballina in the county championship last weekend and in doing so top our group. At a blustery Kilcommon we took an early advantage in the opening stage, opening a 2 point lead, but by the midway mark of the half the sides were level. There was little between the teams as they traded scores for the remainder of the half and were level at the interval. The second half started in the same vein till Ballina hit three on the bounce to pull clear. Upperchurch then scored 4 in a row of their own to regain the lead. With the game entering injury time the sides were level which, coupled with Moneygall beating Burgess in the other group game, saw us heading out of the competition. Matters were compounded when Ballina scored the first goal of the game and seemed to be on their way to victory. A pointed free from Padraig Greene then brought the gap back to two. Then a ball was floated by Gavin Ryan from his own half into a crowded penalty area and managed to find its way into the Ballina net to give Upperchurch a dramatic one point victory. We top the group on 5 points with Moneygall finishing second. Ballina, by virtue of their north division victory, have a second chance in the preliminary quarter finals. We are next in action in the quarter finals on the weekend of Sep 27th with our opponents as yet unknown.
