SENIOR HURLING
We played JK Brackens in the county relegation final on Saturday week last with senior status for both clubs on the line. As expected there was little in it with Brackens edging ahead in the early stages until a well finished goal from Pat Ryan put Upperchurch into a 2 point lead. Brackens responded quickly to draw level again. A Brackens red card stirred a good spell for Upperchurch who built a 5 point lead with some well worked points. This was maintained to the break where we led by 4. However it was our opponents who did all the hurling in the first part of the second half scoring 8 points without reply to take a 4 point advantage. Upperchurch then finally seemed to gain some shape and with 3 unanswered points the Brackens lead was just 1 going into injury time. However we were unable to add an equaliser and it was the Templemore side who got the win 0-18 to 1-14. This means Upperchurch drop to Premier Intermediate for next year after 25 consecutive years at the senior grade. A disappointing end to the year from a hurling perspective and it's vital we focus on regrouping now and a swift return to senior ranks in 2024.
